An exploration of some Actions

To take the new Events Program even further, thought needs to be put into how the city can build off the work that’s been done since 2020. We came up with some actions that we want to dive into.

3-Stream Waste Bins

We believe it's crucial to focus on zero waste at the heart of our events, integrating it into our infrastructure. A prime example is our approach to waste bins. We aim to introduce innovative infrastructure that actively engages event attendees. Drawing inspiration from the London Olympics, where intuitive branding significantly simplified waste disposal for visitors, we plan to implement a similar strategy. These clear bins not only make waste streams visible, aiding in the efficient segregation of waste and recyclables but also minimize the risk of cross-contamination. The bins will feature color-coded compartments and clear labeling, facilitating easy identification from a distance and ensuring proper waste disposal. This setup enhances user experience and allows for continuous monitoring and more effective management by waste management personnel.

Introduce the TAP app

The partnership with an app like TAP reflects an innovative approach to addressing the logistical and environmental challenges that come with such events.

One of the critical aspects of this partnership is the use of technology to enhance attendees' experience and manage resources more efficiently. By using TAP, attendees can easily locate essential infrastructure such as waste bins or refillable water stations. This not only makes it more convenient for attendees to find these facilities but also encourages responsible behavior like recycling and staying hydrated. The app's functionality can also gather data on usage patterns, helping organizers to better understand the needs of their attendees and plan accordingly for future events.

Create Neighborhood Nodes

Due to the absence of a curbside pickup in the city, we proposed utilizing federal funds to establish local composting drop-off points, termed 'neighborhood nodes'. Our selection criteria led us to identify an ideal node location on 38th Street in East Parkside. This initiative would provide residents with special composting buckets, enabling them to conveniently deposit organic waste. Furthermore, the plan includes the potential for a dedicated facility in the area, designed to educate and train 'zero waste ambassadors.' This facility could also function as a station for refilling various items. Our vision for these nodes is inspired by the well-organized and visually appealing compost drop-off location in Cary, North Carolina, aiming to create a similarly tidy and efficient space for our community.

Composting Facilities Vibe

In the city, there's a notable opportunity to establish public-private partnerships with businesses, aiming to address the shortcomings in the services provided by the streets department. These businesses, which have already been contributing significantly, could receive support from the city to sustain and expand their valuable work. Specifically, there's potential for collaboration with vendors capable of creating facilities using recycled materials. This approach would not only enhance the city's infrastructure but also promote sustainability and resourcefulness in urban development.
